Assessment

Intent

At St Monica’s, assessment is a core part of our teaching and learning process. We use it to understand what pupils know, celebrate progress, and identify next steps so every child can achieve their full potential. Assessment is not just about data — it’s about knowing each learner well.

Our approach combines ongoing formative assessment with formal summative assessment across the year. Teachers, pupils, and parents all play an active part in reviewing progress and setting clear goals for improvement.

Implementation

Assessment at St Monica’s takes many forms and is used consistently across all subjects.

Teacher Assessment and HOT Marking

  • Teachers assess pupils continuously through questioning, discussion, observation, and the review of classwork.
  • We use HOT marking (Highlight of Teaching) in all lessons, providing instant, meaningful feedback. Strengths and next steps are clearly identified so children know how to improve immediately.
  • Pupils respond to feedback during dedicated reflection time, allowing misconceptions to be addressed quickly.

Self and Peer Assessment

  • Pupils use a green pen for self-assessment, reflecting on their own learning and identifying how to move forward.
  • Purple pens are used for peer assessment, giving children the opportunity to evaluate each other’s work respectfully and constructively.
  • These routines help pupils take ownership of their learning, build confidence, and understand success criteria more deeply.

Subject-Specific Assessment Practice

  • Reading, Writing, Literacy, and Maths: Pupils are assessed against national curriculum standards and age-related expectations using teacher judgment and Insight Tracker. Progress is tracked termly to ensure children are on track.
  • RE: Assessment follows the standards and expectations of the RE curriculum, supported by teacher observations and pupil work.
  • Computing: Evidence is collected in a floorbook for each class, showing practical work, discussion outcomes, and digital learning. This provides a visual record of skills progression and creativity.
  • PE: Assessment is recorded on Insight Tracker, measured against the PE standards, focusing on physical skills, teamwork, and personal improvement.
  • Foundation Subjects (History, Geography, Science, Art, DT, Music, etc.): Teachers use ongoing assessment recorded on Insight Tracker, referencing pupil work and national guidance from the DfE.

Moderation and Monitoring
Regular moderation ensures teacher judgments are consistent across classes and phases. Leaders monitor assessment information through book looks, planning reviews, learning walks, and pupil discussions.

Impact

Assessment at St Monica’s gives teachers the insight to plan targeted lessons, ensures pupils know exactly what to do to improve, and helps parents understand their child’s progress.

Through clear feedback, self and peer reflection, and consistent tracking, children:

  • Understand what they are learning and why.
  • Know their strengths and next steps.
  • Take responsibility for their progress and develop resilience as learners.

Leaders use assessment outcomes to identify trends, address gaps, and celebrate success. As a result, every pupil’s progress is visible and supported — ensuring high standards across all subjects and continuous improvement across the school.
